Editor’s Pick – Stephanie K: In the Silence of the Snowfall

With a backing band of both a string quartet and a jazz sextet, this album provides unique versions of holiday-centric songs which have a classic sound, aided by modern recording techniques.  The combination of strings and jazz band make this really unique, like on “The Snow is Falling,” which takes what could be a fairly standard sounding blues number and it turns into something much more sophisticated and still mournful, thanks  to the doubled cello and violin parts.  Meanwhile, the title track is a wonderfully modern jazz track, with drummer Jan Freund taking a nicely percussive, sparse approach, while Vince Guaraldi’s holiday classic “Christmas Time is Here” gets the bossa nova treatment, pleasantly echoing Pink Martini’s multi-instrumental approach to lounge jazz.
